Antiviral drugs are a type of medication used specifically for treating viral infections. They act by killing or preventing the growth of viruses. Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and Zanamivir (Relenza) are two types of antiviral medications used against the flu virus. You may have been advised to take one of these.

Why this PGD?

Tamiflu is indicated in adults and children including full term neonates who present with symptoms typical of influenza, when influenza virus is circulating in the community. Efficacy has been demonstrated when treatment is initiated within two days of first onset of symptoms.

Relenza is indicated for treatment of both influenza A and B in adults and children (≥ 5 years) who present with symptoms typical of influenza when influenza is circulating in the community.

Who is this for?

Oseltamivir

Patients one year of age and older who present with symptoms typical of influenza, within 48 hours of symptom onset, when influenza virus is circulating in the community;

Zanamivir

Patients 5 to 65 years
