Wednesday, 22 January 2020 11:18:32 Europe/London
Malaria is an infection that is carried by the Anopheles mosquito in certain parts of the world including Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The infection can be serious and in some cases causes death, so ensuring you are protected against malaria is of utmost importance before you leave UK.
Travel Clinic Epsom
At Miles Pharmacy, we understand how important it is to be able to access a travel vaccine clinic in your local area. Our local pharmacy means that you can easily take care of all of your travel health needs, including malaria prophylaxis, without causing disruption to your day.
What is Malaria?
Malaria is a parasitic infection that is transmitted when an infected mosquito bites the skin and transmits the parasites in its saliva. Symptoms include chills and a high fever, headache, nausea and abdominal symptoms. If left untreated, complications include anaemia, brain swelling, jaundice and kidney failure. Prevention is therefore better than cure.
Whereas in the past, anti-malarials were only available if prescribed by your GP, with PGD prescribing our pharmacists at Miles Pharmacy, then we can prescribe and dispense the anti-malarials you require for your trip. This means you do not need to make a trip to your GP therefore saving precious NHS resources.
As part of your appointment, our pharmacists can also advise on vaccinations you require as part of our travel vaccine clinic service. From hepatitis to rabies, we can help you protect your health.
Aside from anti-malarial, you can take steps to reduce your risk of being bitten by mosquitoes in the first place. Wear light, protective clothing, use deet containing insect repellents, and ensure you wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk. Mosquito nets are a must for sleeping under.
Stop searching for a ‘travel doctor near me’ and trust Miles Pharmacy for all your travel health needs.
