Rabies is one of the most lethal diseases known to people. But it is also 100% preventable. Despite its long history, it keeps on infecting around 59,000 passes every year, generally among youngsters.

Rabies is a rare but very serious and life-threatening infection of the brain and nerves. It is usually caught from the scratch or bite of an infected animal, most commonly a dog but not always. Rabies is not found in the UK other than in a small number of wild bats, so it presents no risk but it is present in other parts of the world particularly Africa, Asia and in Central and South America.

September 28^th 2020 is the 14^th World Rabies Day which is an international awareness campaign coordinated by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, a non-profit organisation with its Headquarters in the United States.  Endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO), World Rabies Day takes place on the 28^th September each year specifically because this is the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur who with his colleagues was responsible for developing the first rabies vaccine.
