Effects of the Yellow Fever vaccination on the Immune System
Thursday, 5 November 2020 10:49:17 Europe/London
Vaccinations are like a training course for the immune system and the Yellow Fever vaccination is no different from any other. The vaccination prepares the body to fight the Yellow Fever virus without exposing it to the symptoms of the disease. The vaccination is like a dress rehearsal so that if the individual encounters Yellow Fever abroad, the body has already produced a complete defence against it and thus that person is protected against contracting the disease and becoming ill. If your travel plans mean you require the Yellow Fever vaccination then contact our travel services clinic to make an appointment.
What is the Yellow Fever virus?
Yellow Fever is a serious infection spread by mosquitoes in parts of Africa, Central and South America and Trinidad. If you are travelling to one of these areas where Yellow Fever is endemic then you should have the Yellow Fever vaccination. Some countries require certification to prove that you have had the vaccination. You need to have the vaccine at least ten days before you travel for it to work and your certification will only be valid for entry to specific countries after this period of time has elapsed.
How is Yellow Fever spread?
Yellow Fever is spread by mosquito bites and even if you have been vaccinated, you should still avoid being bitten. Wearing light clothing which is cool and breathable and loosely covers your body will help protect you from bites. Use insect repellent and mosquito nets at night to protect you whilst you sleep. Mosquitoes can carry other unwanted diseases like malaria so it is always best to protect yourself from being bitten regardless of your vaccination status.
What are the symptoms of the Yellow Fever virus?
- A high temperature
- A feeling of sickness or actual vomiting
- Backache and general muscle pain
- Sensitivity to light
- Loss of appetite and a general feeling of being unwell
Some people will go on to develop more serious symptoms such as jaundice and vomiting blood or passing blood in their stools.
